Amyris Essential Oil (Amyris balsamifera)

A warm, smoky wood oil, often called West Indian sandalwood.

Our amyris essential oil is steam-distilled from the wood of the Amyris balsamifera tree. It has a rich, smoky, sweet and balsamic scent, and its thick, viscous body makes it a favourite fixative in natural perfumery, helping lighter citrus and floral notes linger longer on the skin and in the air.

Each bottle is made of matte black glass to help protect the oil from light, and comes with a glass pipette dropper for controlled, drop-by-drop use. Choose the 10ml size to try it or the 30ml size for regular use.

How to use

• Diffuser: add 5 to 8 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser in a well-ventilated room, in sessions of 30 to 60 minutes.
• Inhalation: put 1 to 2 drops on a tissue and breathe in gently. Keep the tissue away from your skin.
• On the skin: always dilute. Mix 2 drops into 10ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond (about 1%). Never exceed 1%. Patch test first.

Important safety information

• Dilute and patch test. Keep skin use to 1% or less (about 2 drops per 10ml, or 3 drops per 15ml, of carrier oil). May cause an allergic skin reaction. Never apply undiluted, and avoid sensitive or damaged skin.
• External and aromatic use only. Do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes.
• Keep out of reach of children. Do not use on or near the face of babies or young children.
• Essential oils can be harmful to pets, particularly cats. Ventilate the room, let animals leave freely when diffusing, and never apply the oil to or near them.
• If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition, speak to a healthcare professional before use. Published safety data on amyris is limited.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put amyris essential oil on my skin?
Only when diluted. Use no more than 1% (about 2 drops per 10ml of carrier oil), patch test first and stop if irritation occurs. Avoid sensitive or damaged skin.

Why is amyris called West Indian sandalwood?
Its woody, balsamic scent is reminiscent of sandalwood, and it has long been used as a more affordable alternative in perfumery. It is a different plant from true sandalwood.

What does amyris blend well with?
It pairs beautifully with Lavender, Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium and Sandalwood.
