Vetiver Essential Oil (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

The oil of deep, earthy stillness.

Our vetiver essential oil is steam-distilled from the roots of a tall tropical grass and has a deep, dark, smoky and earthy aroma with a sweet balsamic undertone. It is one of the great base notes of natural perfumery and a fine fixative, giving blends their depth and staying power.

Each bottle is made of matte black glass to help protect the oil from light, and comes with a gold-rimmed glass pipette dropper for controlled, drop-by-drop use. Choose the 10ml size to try it or the 30ml size for regular use. Vetiver is thick and slow-moving, especially in cool weather, so warm the bottle briefly in your palms before use.

How to use

• Diffuser: add 2 to 3 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser in a well-ventilated room, in short sessions. It is best blended with a citrus oil, as vetiver alone can feel heavy in a small room.
• Inhalation: put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe in slowly from a comfortable distance. Keep it off your skin and away from young children.
• On the skin: always dilute. Mix 3 drops into 15ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond (about 1%), or 2 drops into 10ml. Never exceed 1%. Patch test first.

• May cause an allergic skin reaction. Always dilute before applying to the skin, keep skin use to 1% or less and avoid the face and broken skin.
• For external and aromatic use only. Do not swallow.
• Keep out of reach of children, and do not use on or near the face of babies or young children.
• Take care around pets, especially cats, which are sensitive to essential oils: ventilate the room, let animals leave freely and never apply the oil to them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put vetiver essential oil on my skin?
Only when diluted. Use no more than 1% (about 3 drops per 15ml of carrier oil, or 2 drops per 10ml), patch test first and avoid the face and broken skin.

Why is vetiver so thick?
Vetiver is distilled from dense roots and the oil is naturally viscous, especially in cool weather. Warm the closed bottle briefly in your hands before use to help it flow.

What does vetiver blend well with?
It pairs beautifully with Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lavender, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang.
