Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil (Backhousia citriodora)

Our lemon myrtle essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Backhousia citriodora, a tree native to the subtropical rainforests of Australia. Its aroma is intensely fresh and lemony, with a soft herbal depth, and many people find it even brighter than lemon itself. In natural perfumery and home fragrance it is a radiant top note. It is a very strong oil, so a little goes a long way.

Each bottle is made of matte black glass to help protect the oil from light, and comes with a glass pipette dropper for drop-by-drop use. Choose the 10ml size to try it or the 30ml size for regular use.

How to use

• Diffuser: add 2 to 3 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser in a well-ventilated room, in short sessions. It is very strong, so start with fewer drops than you would use of lemon.
• Inhalation: put 1 drop on a tissue and hold it a little distance away. Keep the tissue away from your skin.
• On the skin: always dilute. Mix 1 drop into 15ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba (about 0.3%). Never exceed 0.3%. Patch test first. Not for children under 2.

Important safety information

• Very strong, citral-rich oil. It can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. Never apply undiluted, use no more than 0.3% (1 drop per 15ml of carrier oil) and patch test first. Avoid the face, eyes, sensitive or damaged skin.
• Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you have epilepsy, liver problems or any other medical condition, or take regular medication.
• Do not use on the skin of children under 2, or on or near the face of babies and young children. Keep out of reach of children.
• Not recommended around pets, particularly cats. Ventilate the room, let animals leave when diffusing and never apply it to or near them.
• For external and aromatic use only. Do not swallow. Keep diffusing short and stop if you notice coughing or irritation.
• Essential oils are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.

Can I put lemon myrtle essential oil on my skin?
Only with great care. It is very strong and can irritate. Keep it to 0.3% or less (1 drop per 15ml of carrier oil), patch test first, avoid the face and damaged skin, and do not use it on children under 2.

How is lemon myrtle different from lemon essential oil?
Lemon oil is cold-pressed from the peel, while lemon myrtle is steam-distilled from leaves and is much higher in citral. It smells stronger and cleaner, and it needs far lower dilution on the skin.

What does lemon myrtle blend well with?
It blends well with Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender, Tea Tree and Ginger.
