Our patchouli essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin, which are dried and lightly fermented before distillation, a traditional step that brings out its rich, dark character. The aroma is deep, earthy and balsamic with a sweet, musky warmth that softens with age. It is the definitive base note in natural perfumery and a superb fixative.

Each bottle is made of matte black glass to help protect the oil from light, and comes with a glass pipette dropper with a silver collar for controlled, drop-by-drop use. Choose the 10ml size to try it or the 30ml size for regular use.

How to use

• Diffuser: add 2 to 3 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser in a well-ventilated room, in sessions of 30 to 60 minutes. Patchouli is potent, so start with less.
• Inhalation: put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe in slowly, holding it a little way from your face.
• On the skin: always dilute. Mix 3 drops into 15ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba (about 1%), or blend into an unscented base cream. Never exceed 1%. Patch test first.

• May cause skin irritation or an allergic skin reaction in some people. Use no more than 1% on the skin (about 3 drops per 15ml of carrier oil), patch test first, and avoid sensitive or damaged skin.
• Patchouli may feel sedating in stronger concentrations, so take care before driving or operating machinery.
• Essential oils can be harmful to pets, particularly cats. Ventilate the room, let animals leave when diffusing, and do not apply the oil to or near them. Do not use on or near the face of babies or young children.
• For external and aromatic use only. Do not swallow.
