Blue Tansy Essential Oil (Tanacetum annuum)

The cobalt-blue oil of northern Morocco.

Our blue tansy essential oil is steam-distilled from the tiny yellow flowers of Tanacetum annuum. During distillation a natural compound called chamazulene forms, turning the oil a vivid cobalt blue. The aroma is sweet, herbaceous and mellow with a soft apple-like note, which makes it a velvety middle note in natural perfumery and a favourite for calm, unhurried evenings.

Each bottle is made of glass, to help protect the oil from light, and comes with a glass pipette for controlled, drop-by-drop use. Choose the 10ml size to try it or the 30ml size for regular use.

How to use

• Diffuser: add 2 to 3 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser in a well-ventilated room, in short sessions. A little goes a long way.
• Inhalation: put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe in gently. Keep the tissue away from your skin.
• On the skin: always dilute. Mix 3 drops into 15ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba (about 1%). Never exceed 1%. Patch test first. The deep blue colour can stain skin and fabric.

• Potent oil. Keep skin use to 1% or less (about 3 drops per 15ml of carrier oil). Blue tansy may cause an allergic skin reaction, and the blue colour can stain skin, fabric and light surfaces.
• Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and avoid if you have epilepsy, unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise.
• Not recommended around pets, especially cats, and not for use on or near young children. Ventilate the room and let animals leave when diffusing.
• For external and aromatic use only. Do not swallow.
• Never apply undiluted. Avoid contact with eyes.
• Keep out of reach of children.

Can I put blue tansy essential oil on my skin?
Only when diluted, at 1% or less (about 3 drops per 15ml of carrier oil), and after a patch test. It can cause an allergic skin reaction and may stain skin or fabric, so avoid broken or sensitive skin.

Why is blue tansy oil blue?
During steam distillation, a natural compound called chamazulene forms and gives the oil its deep cobalt colour. Check that the label says Tanacetum annuum, as common tansy is a different plant.

What does blue tansy blend with?
Its sweet, herbaceous aroma pairs well with Lavender, Frankincense, Geranium and Cedarwood.
