Cosy Autumn and Winter Scents for a Mediterranean Home

Even on the Costa Blanca, the evenings eventually draw in, the blankets come out and the oranges ripen on the trees. It is the perfect time to switch your home from bright summer scents to something warmer and cosier.

The scents of the season

  • Sweet orange and mandarin: the citrus harvest is in full swing in Spain, and nothing smells more cheerful on a grey day.
  • Cinnamon, clove and cardamom: warm, spiced and festive. Use them sparingly, as they are strong.
  • Frankincense and myrrh: deep and resinous, the classic scents of the festive season.
  • Pine, spruce and cedarwood: a crisp walk through the forest, without leaving the sofa.
  • Vanilla: soft, sweet and comforting.

Five little winter rituals

  1. Warm the house on the way home: light a candle as soon as you get in and let the scent build while you make dinner.
  2. Scented blankets: a light mist of linen spray over the sofa throw makes movie night extra cosy. Test on a hidden area first.
  3. Orange peel simmer pot: simmer orange peel, a cinnamon stick and a few cloves in a pan of water. Not an essential oil, but a lovely old trick.
  4. Sunday reset: open the windows for ten minutes, then diffuse something fresh to reset the house for the week.
  5. Bath and book: a warm bath, a good book and a candle. The perfect end to a chilly day.

A note on winter safety

Homes are more closed up in winter, so keep diffusing sessions short and the room ventilated, never leave candles unattended, and keep spicy oils well away from children and pets.
