Rose Absolute
The Queen of Flowers in Her Richest Form
Rose absolute is a deep, sweet and unmistakably floral aromatic, solvent-extracted from damask rose petals, prized in natural perfumery and gentle, well-diluted skin rituals.
Botanical name: Rosa damascena
Aroma: Rich, deep, honeyed and softly spicy-floral
Note: Middle
Main growing region: Bulgaria (as sourced for this absolute)
Typically extracted: Solvent-extracted from the petals (an absolute, not steam-distilled)
Blends well with: Geranium, Sandalwood, Bergamot, Jasmine and Frankincense
Top 3 benefits:
- Natural perfume: the definitive floral heart note, rich and romantic in a very diluted roll-on.
- Skin care ritual: traditionally loved in facial oils for its beautiful scent, used with great restraint.
- Comforting scent: many people find the aroma of rose soothing and reassuring at the end of a long day.
Safety first: rose absolute is highly concentrated, so keep skin use to 0.5% or less (1 drop per 10ml of carrier oil), patch test first, and do not use it in an ultrasonic diffuser. Read the full safety information.
What Is Rose Absolute?
Rose absolute comes from the petals of Rosa damascena, the damask rose. This absolute is sourced from Bulgaria, where the petals are gathered by hand in the early hours of the morning. Rather than being steam-distilled, the petals are solvent-extracted, which captures heavier aromatic molecules that heat would lose.
The result is a deep amber to red-orange, thick and very concentrated aromatic that smells closer to the living flower than distilled rose oil. Its character comes from compounds such as citronellol, geraniol, phenylethyl alcohol and nerol. Because it is so potent, a single drop is usually enough.
Benefits and Traditional Uses
The science: rose has long been associated with love, tenderness and comfort, and many people find its rich floral scent soothing. Research into its aromatherapy effects is limited, so enjoy it as a beautiful scent rather than a treatment for any emotion or condition.
How to use (the quiet moment): put 1 drop on the back of your hand, warm it gently, and breathe slowly. Keep it off the face and avoid it on broken skin.
The science: rose is one of the most traditional ingredients in beauty rituals, valued for its scent and its luxurious feel in oils. Evidence for specific skin effects is limited, so think of it as a sensory pleasure and keep dilutions very low.
How to use (the evening facial oil): mix 1 drop of rose absolute with 10ml of jojoba or rosehip oil (about 0.5%). Patch test on the inner arm first, then smooth a small amount over clean skin, avoiding the eyes.
The science: rose absolute is the reference point of natural floral perfumery, anchoring classic floral and oriental accords. In a roller bottle, it wears close to the skin and develops beautifully with body warmth.
How to use (the botanical perfume): add 1 drop of rose absolute to 10ml of carrier oil in a roller bottle (0.5%), blend in a drop of Sandalwood if you like, and apply a little to the wrists.

Rose Absolute Safety Information
- Dilute and patch test. Use no more than 0.5% on the skin (1 drop per 10ml of carrier oil). Rose absolute is highly concentrated and may cause an allergic skin reaction in sensitive people, so patch test first, never apply it neat, and stop using it if irritation occurs.
- External and aromatic use only. Do not swallow essential oils or absolutes.
- Not for ultrasonic diffusers. As an absolute, rose is thick and waxy and can clog the mechanism of an ultrasonic diffuser. Use it on a tissue or in a diluted carrier oil blend instead.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and health conditions. Speak to a healthcare professional before use, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have sensitive skin or allergies, or take medication.
- Children. Keep out of reach of children. We do not recommend rose absolute on the skin of babies and young children.
- Pets. Essential oils can be harmful to pets. Keep the bottle out of reach, let animals leave freely when you use it indoors, and do not apply it to them.
- Chemical profile. Rich in phenylethyl alcohol, citronellol, geraniol and nerol.

History and Heritage
The rose has been cultivated for its beauty and fragrance for thousands of years. Rosa damascena, the damask rose, is thought to have originated in the Middle East and is now grown for perfumery in places such as Bulgaria, Turkey and Iran.
Bulgaria’s Rose Valley is especially famous for its roses, which are traditionally picked by hand in the early morning, when the flowers hold the most fragrance. A very large number of petals is needed to make even a small amount of absolute, which is why rose is among the most precious of natural aromatics.
Today rose absolute remains the heart of countless natural and classic perfumes.
Rose Absolute FAQs
Is rose absolute safe to use on the skin?
Only when well diluted. We recommend 0.5% or less (1 drop per 10ml of carrier oil), a patch test first, and avoiding the eyes and broken skin. Never apply it neat, and stop if irritation occurs.
Can I use rose absolute during pregnancy?
Speak to a midwife or doctor first. There is limited specific guidance for rose absolute, and many practitioners advise caution with concentrated aromatics during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What is the difference between rose absolute and rose otto?
Rose otto is steam-distilled, while rose absolute is solvent-extracted. The absolute is thicker, deeper and sweeter, closer to the living flower, and very concentrated, so it is used in tiny amounts.
What does rose absolute smell like and what blends with it?
It smells rich, deep, honeyed and softly spicy-floral. It blends well with Geranium, Sandalwood, Bergamot and Jasmine.
Can I put rose absolute in my diffuser?
We do not recommend it. Rose absolute is thick and waxy and can clog an ultrasonic diffuser. Put a drop on a tissue, or blend it into a carrier oil roll-on to enjoy the scent instead.
