10 Golden Rules for Using Essential Oils Safely

Natural does not mean weak. Essential oils are highly concentrated, which is exactly why a few drops go such a long way. Follow these ten simple rules and you can enjoy them with complete confidence.

1. Never use them neat on the skin

Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or fractionated coconut. Undiluted oils can irritate the skin and, over time, lead to sensitisation, which means a reaction every time you use that oil. Our dilution guide makes it simple.

2. Patch test first

Before using a new oil or blend on your skin, apply a little of the diluted mixture to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. If you notice redness or itching, do not use it.

3. Do not swallow essential oils

Our oils are for aromatic and external use only. Keep them away from food and drinks, and never add them to water to drink.

4. Keep them away from eyes

Wash your hands after handling oils. If an oil gets in your eye, rinse with a carrier oil or plenty of clean water and seek medical advice if discomfort continues.

5. Respect the sunshine

Some cold-pressed citrus oils, especially bergamot, lemon, lime and grapefruit, can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun and sunbeds on treated skin for at least 12 hours. Living on the Costa Blanca, this one matters to us. Read more in our citrus and sunshine guide.

6. Children need extra care

Keep bottles locked away, as a small bottle can look like a treat to a curious child. Use much lower dilutions for children and avoid strong oils such as peppermint and eucalyptus around babies and young children.

7. Think about your pets

Cats, dogs and especially birds are more sensitive to essential oils than we are. Never apply oils to pets, diffuse in a ventilated room and always leave a door open so animals can leave. Our pet safety guide explains more.

8. Pregnancy and health conditions

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition such as epilepsy or asthma, speak to a healthcare professional before using essential oils.

9. Diffuse little and often

More is not better. Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes at a time in a well-ventilated room, then take a break. A few drops is all you need.

10. Store them well

Keep lids tightly closed, store bottles upright in a cool, dark place, and keep them away from naked flames. Oxidised oils are more likely to irritate the skin, so use citrus oils within about a year of opening.

The bottom line

Used sensibly, essential oils are a simple pleasure to enjoy every day. Every VivaForte product page includes its own safety information, and our full essential oil safety guide covers each oil in more detail.
