How to Use an Essential Oil Diffuser (and How Many Drops)
A diffuser is the easiest way to fill your home with natural scent. Here is how to get it right every time, from the number of drops to keeping your diffuser clean.
Step by step
- Find the right spot. Place your diffuser on a flat, stable surface, at least 50cm off the floor, away from electronics and out of reach of children and pets.
- Add water. Use room-temperature tap water up to the fill line. Filtered water helps if you live in a hard-water area, which covers much of Spain.
- Add your oil. Follow the drops guide below.
- Switch on and relax. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a break.
How many drops?
| Diffuser size | Drops of oil |
|---|---|
| 100ml | 3 to 5 drops |
| 200ml | 6 to 8 drops |
| 300ml | 9 to 12 drops |
| 500ml | 12 to 15 drops |
Start at the lower end. You can always add a drop more, but you cannot take one away. Strong oils such as peppermint, clove and cinnamon need fewer drops than gentle oils such as lavender or sweet orange.

Common mistakes
- Running it all day. Your nose gets used to a scent within about 20 minutes, so you stop noticing it. Short sessions keep the aroma enjoyable.
- Using too much oil. A heavy scent can cause headaches. Less really is more.
- Diffusing in a closed room. Keep a window or door slightly open for fresh air.
- Forgetting to clean it. Oil residue builds up and changes the scent of your next blend.
Cleaning your diffuser
Once a week, unplug it, empty it and fill halfway with water plus a teaspoon of white vinegar. Run it for five minutes, empty it, then wipe the inside gently with a cotton bud. Rinse, dry and you are ready to go.
